Shilla Hekmat

Shilla Hekmat

Shilla has established herself as a prominent piano educator in Los Angeles. She graduated from CSU Northridge’s music department, and has devoted herself to music education ever since. She has taught hundreds of students over the past 28 years, many of whom have gone on to become successful pianists. Over the course of her teaching career, she has become an expert in recognizing the challenges and obstacles that many young musicians face. Drawing from her many years of experience, Shilla crafted a unique teaching approach that turns piano lessons into a goal-oriented game. The success of this teaching method prompted her to author a series of innovative instructional books called The Shilla Hekmat Piano Method.

Today, Shilla is active in the community of musicians and music educators. She is chairman of Composers Today at the Music Teachers Association of California, and is also involved with the Music Teachers National Association and the American College of Musicians. Her teaching philosophies have been published in Keyboard Companion Magazine, and she has been a judge at various musical competitions including the Southwestern Youth Music Festival. Shilla’s theories on music education have been presented in lectures at the Music Teachers Association of California and the California Association of Professional Music Teachers.

Shilla is also dedicated to enriching the lives of children. She is a committee member of Looking Beyond, a nonprofit organization committed to creating opportunities for children with special needs.
